IS FREEMASONRY IN ANY WAY POLITICAL?

Freemasonry is non-political and the discussion of politics during Masonic meetings is discouraged. The International Order of Co-Freemasonry does not pursue any political agenda. However, as the name of the Order would suggest, human rights - Le Droit Humain - do play an important part in our considerations.

During the First World War, Masons from opposing armies would arrange and participate in Lodges together during brief periods of truce amongst the fighting. After the lodge meetings, which were conducted in true fraternity, the Masons would go their separate ways and resume their military roles as foes, doing their duty for their country and their rulers.

As well as widely differing religious beliefs, Masons tend to share widely differing political viewpoints due to their varied backgrounds and circumstances. In our view, Masonic principles tend to assist members to understand and respect each other's standpoints on political matters, as they would any other issue. This avoids many confrontations and, we trust, provides a constructive foundation from which many benefits may ensue.
