Freemasonry explores a spiritual explanation of the universe and the individual's place within it. Masonic ritual and symbolism are the tools freemasons use in the search for truth. The International Order of Co-Freemasonry, Le Droit Humain, is global, and membership is available to men and women on equal terms, without distinction of race, gender, ethnic origin, philosophical or religious order. The Order is founded on the ancient teachings and traditions of freemasonry and works a system of initiatory continuity from the 1° to the 33° inclusive.

The South African Federation was formed in 1914 in Durban and spread to Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. The South African lodges achieved Federation status in 1995.
